Figure 3 â Full height hurdles in correct position As an alternative approach set the hurdles to their correct height, in this example âHâ = 76cm, but shorten the distance âDâ to the first hurdle and The beginning hurdler is going to run up to the hurdle, slow down, jump over the hurdle, then start running again. For best results, set up 10 Mini Hurdles at 3-foot spacing. As the athlete's progress, gradually increase the height of the practice barriers and increase their number. Before running hurdles, focus on improving your speed. Then gradually raise the height of the hurdles (1.5" at a time) until the athlete is hurdling at the specified height for racing. At the youth and high school level, the best hurdlers likely have ⦠Learn the Rhythm. Position hurdles for agility drills, running drills and plyometric jumps. Lateral movement in hurdling should be avoided and concentration placed on forward movement of the body and vertical movements of the arms and legs. By putting on bursts of speed during your run, you can train your body to run faster. They should always include flexibility and stretching exercises in their warm-ups with special attention to the hamstrings, hips and trunk. in height, set up four lanes of hurdles with the following heights and spacing (Table 1). The arm opposite to the lead foot should be driven forward and up in an exaggerated sprinting action to balance the high drive of the lead foot. Speed training hurdles usually come in a set with several units, enhancing workout options. To improve stamina, the hurdler should do interval training with the sprinters. Developing Beginning Hurdlers 1) To me, the most important thing to teach beginning hurdlers is to sprint on the balls of their feet, not on their... 2) Lead with the knee, lead with the knee, lead with the knee. Coach, the complete strategy for developing champion hurdlers is explained best in coach Steve McGillâs The Art of Hurdling, but these two drills cover the fundamentals and are enough to help your hurdlers learn to 3-step and win their first few races.. These devices are lightweight and collapse easily when struck. They should be encouraged to run fast or sprint over the hurdles as the objective of the event is to get to the finish line as fast as possible. Mike Rosenbaum is an award-winning sports writer covering various sports and events for more than 15 years.    At this time, also, the arm action during hurdle clearance should be watched. When you go for a run, alternate sprinting sections and then jogging sections. Just get the hurdlers comfortable clearing the barriers without jumping, while developing a reasonably consistent stride pattern. The effect is the same. Hurdle Distances. Next, nothing beats repetition when youâre teaching hurdle clearance. It doesn't matter how big or small the athlete is, they start with lane 3. They then place the toes of their trail leg on the ground as far away from the wall as possible and pull the knee of the trail leg forward and up out to the side in a circular motion with the foot following and then pawing the ground slightly ahead of and to the side of the lead-leg foot on the ground.    Once the hurdlers have gained confidence and speed running over the hurdles, taking five steps between the hurdles, rearrange the spacing of the hurdles to enable them to run with three steps between the hurdles (Table 2). Options include adjustable power hurdles, which can generally be set from 6 to 42 inches high. (1 ft., 6 in.)    Once the hurdlers have gained confidence and speed running over the hurdles, taking five steps between the hurdles, rearrange the spacing of the hurdles to enable them to run with three steps between the hurdles (Table 2). For a hurdler leading over the hurdle with his right foot, the left arm should be driven forward and up in a bent position, thereby forcing the upper body forward and down. For those who are leading with their left leg, have them walk to the right of the hurdle, lift their lead leg and stretch it out, to demonstrate that their leg can rise above the hurdle.    A common fault among hurdlers is to take one step out of the blocks and then lift the head to look at the first hurdle and come to an erect running position too soon. The Hurdles should be evenly spaced to emphasize both technique and posture.    Instruct the athletes to run with an exaggerated knee lift over the lane 3 hurdles taking five steps between the hurdles.    The object in all technique coaching in hurdles is to get the athletes sprinting, spending as little time as possible in the air over the hurdles.    In this way, the rhythm is easily learned and the tendency to jump over the hurdles is diminished, especially by the sixth or eighth flight when the hurdler's legs are too tired to jump. Yes, theyâll still jump the first few times, but as their comfort increases, the visualization will remain in their mind and help them progress. For a hurdler leading over the hurdle with his right foot, the left arm should be driven forward and up in a bent position, thereby forcing the upper body forward and down. Constant repetition over a few hurdles, day after day, gives the best results. B. The start for a hurdler should be almost the same as that for a sprinter: shoulders low, knees and legs driving hard to propel the body forward. If problems occur with the clearance technique while doing the increases, revert to hurdling over three hurdles set to allow five steps between the hurdles.    If possible, these practices should be run with competition. The athletes themselves can listen to their footfalls and judge if their rhythm is good or not. In this way, the athlete has more time between hurdles to concentrate on the clearance technique for each hurdle. Correct this by instructing them to go forward not up over the hurdles. During the spring and summer, one workout per week at least should include full-out sprints over flights of four or more hurdles from the blocks. If another hurdler of the same ability is not available, run them against a sprinter.    This must be constantly repeated until the action is learned and then have the athlete return to running hurdle flights. Reduced to simple terms, the ideal hurdler will basically run the 100 to 400 meters, while taking what amounts to a long, gliding stride over each hurdle.    To teach the correct movement of the trail leg, instruct the athletes to stand with their toes five (of their own) feet from the wall and then lean against the wall with both hands a little above shoulder height. Thereâs a reason that the hurdles are considered running events, rather than jumping events. Keep looking for relaxed, fast sprinting between the hurdles. Trail Leg Lead with the knee. Mini Hurdles provide speed training that focuses on acceleration through fast stride rate/frequency. If this is a problem, have the athlete temporarily use one hurdle and concentrate on driving the knee of the lead leg towards the hurdle using a fast, flicking action of the lead foot to clear the hurdle and snap the foot back down to the track.    There is a great tendency for athletes to swing the lead leg up over the hurdle, much as a high jumper gets extra lift by vigorously swinging up his lead leg. Too many athletes float after clearing the hurdle and thereby add costly time to their hurdle races. It almost doesnât matter how small you make the barriers in practice. Novices must focus on selecting a lead hurdling leg (usually the left for right-handers), then develop a consistent stride pattern, because the stride pattern determines which leg is placed in the back of the starting blocks. Here is a full training session with cues for mastering the 1-step drill. Among the teaching points for beginning hurdlers, the start will be the easiest. A constant, fast rhythm of footfalls is to be strived for, not a fast patter with a pause at each hurdle. If the athlete is already familiar with hurdling then he would go on to a more difficult lane.    If possible, these practices should be run with competition. As they improve, they can progress to the next higher hurdle flight. The HURDLE TRAINER teaches proper arm and leg action safely â it is perfect for quickly learning proper hurdling form. Often hurdlers will use a sideways action of the arm, introducing a detrimental lateral movement. The action of the lead leg is quite different; the knee is driven high in front of the chest toward the hurdle with the foot being snapped up just high enough to clear the hurdle. Look to make sure he is driving the knee towards the wall and not a straight leg. This book was originally written by Parker in the 1970's, but he has rewritten it completely and provided all-new illustrations and photo sequences (all in color in the book). To improve stamina, the hurdler should do interval training with the sprinters. As the right foot is snapped down to the track, the left arm also moves downward and back into sprinting action and is not flung out to the side. Use four hurdles. Hurdling Equipment. As they improve, they can progress to the next higher hurdle flight. Even when warming up over the smaller hurdles, the hurdler should move his feet very fast. Next, add the second hurdle, so the competitors can begin developing a stride pattern between hurdles. Training hurdles also double as plyometric training devices.    The lean towards the hurdle and off the hurdle is necessary to counteract the upward, lifting action of the lead leg.    Often coaches are presented with the task of re-teaching proper hurdle technique to an athlete who is hurdling incorrectly, whether that athlete is jumping the hurdles, over-striding, swinging the lead leg up, sitting on top of the hurdle, pulling the trail knee through low or a myriad of other faults. The ideal hurdle to teach the beginner; This hurdle is non-adjustable; height of board is set at 24" and is 41" long; Board is white with black stripes; Shipped Freight: Usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for delivery The key to teaching hurdling to young athletes is repetition. 99. Generally the athlete will spend too much time in the air over the hurdles and the following three steps have a dum-da-dum rhythm instead of a quick da-da-da or 1-2-3 action-in other words, a quick, even three-stride action between the hurdles. Specifications: Height: varies based on size; Length: 9" Width: 18"    The hurdlers will probably begin running over the hurdles slowly to start with but should start running faster as they gain confidence and rhythm. Many races, after all, are won between the final hurdle and the tape. Training Hurdles. The hurdler should not look up to the hurdle crossbar until third or fourth stride and should try to skim over the hurdle as low as possible in order not to lose the acceleration of a fast sprint start. CoachR.org is dedicated to Coach Ross Dunton.    Using non-weighted or scissors hurdles that can adjust down to 46 cm.    For the average hurdler, an eight-stride runup to the first hurdle is normal. The hurdle race is basically a sprint race and this should be continually emphasized. All of my hurdlers, no matter if theyâre youth or advanced, begin the season ⦠As some coaches like to say, a hurdles event is a sprint race with a few small barriers along the way. Again, repetition is the best teacher. For a standing start, the foot of the trail leg should be directly behind the starting line. As with any running event, a good stretching routine is a must. As with any running event, a good stretching routine is a must. Picking individual strings. (ca. first hurdle: your momentum is what will carry you over. The athletes themselves can listen to their footfalls and judge if their rhythm is good or not.    Also, instruct the athletes to clear the trailing leg by lifting the knee high and out to the side under the arm with the knee in a higher position than the foot. The 1 Step is a quick and light run through the hurdles. Another type of workout is a weaving hurdle drill, as youâll move around the hurdles ⦠Even young, active, flexible runners will benefit from a good warm-up. The book is available from Tafnews Press (Book Division of Track & Field News), 2570 El Camino Real, Suite 606, Mountain View, CA 94040 USA. If the hurdler takes an even number of steps to the first hurdle, the lead leg goes in the back block, and vice-versa for an odd number of steps. Run over hurdles (8 step approach) 3 to 5 hurdles with 5 steps between hurdles x 3 (add on any given day)--this could be speed workout for the day, i.e., 4x4x40 with hurdles (3 each) or 3x3x60 with hurdles (5 each). An aggressive drive away from the hurdle could be considered the secret to good hurdling. But thereâs plenty of time to work on starting technique. Hurdles: Introduction for Beginners Thereâs a reason that the hurdles are considered running events, rather than jumping events. At some levels, youth hurdlers will face eight barriers, moving up to a maximum of 10. The athlete will lift up into the air and float over the hurdle thereby interrupting the running rhythm and slowing the athlete down. 7. The athlete will lift up into the air and float over the hurdle thereby interrupting the running rhythm and slowing the athlete down. The next step is getting the runners comfortable with clearing hurdles, and beginning to teach them to avoid the run-jump-run instinct, which can only be accomplished through repetition. Therefore constant emphasis must be placed on stepping over the hurdles and running with high knees over the hurdles. $221.36 $ 221. It is also important for the hurdler to run 10 meters past the last hurdle to get used to the finish of the race. As the right foot is snapped down to the track, the left arm also moves downward and back into sprinting action and is not flung out to the side. The Spatial Illusion drill uses 4-foot spacing.    The hurdlers should do six to twelve flights of hurdles at each workout.    To remedy the problem, first reduce the height of the hurdles to a height easily cleared without jumping and reduce the distance between the hurdles so that the athlete does not have to overstride but can run relaxed and quickly. $209.99 $ 209. For coaches of youngsters, this is "must" reading. ⢠There should be no deceleration over these hurdles-even splits. There are 9.14 meters between hurdles and ⦠Start with Ipace (approximately 4feet apart).    The athlete returns to the starting position and does it again repeatedly, trying to get the chest forward and down towards the thigh of the lead leg. Set 4 hurdles with increasing distance between them ( 11ft-13ft-15ft-17ft) Once the athlete can 3 step those four, remove the fists hurdle and place one at the end that is 19ft apart.    The hurdlers should do six to twelve flights of hurdles at each workout. Use with forward and lateral drills.    Once the athlete is sprinting over the hurdles with the correct technique, gradually increase the distance between the hurdles to approach the specified distance for the age group of the athlete. Keep looking for relaxed, fast sprinting between the hurdles.    To teach the proper movement of the lead leg, have the athlete stand four (of their) feet from a solid wall. Theyâll get their feet back on the ground quickly after clearing each hurdle. It may also be beneficial to instruct the hurdlers to lean slightly forward off the hurdle as the lead foot touches the track so that their hips do not accelerate ahead of their shoulders. As the athletes warm up and are able to do the first lane with ease, instruct them to move to the next lane, progressively running faster.    After a few weeks of practice, the hurdlers should be ready for two actions necessary to increase the speed of hurdle clearance:    The lean towards the hurdle and off the hurdle is necessary to counteract the upward, lifting action of the lead leg.    The hurdlers will probably begin running over the hurdles slowly to start with but should start running faster as they gain confidence and rhythm. I have used these teaching steps with class-sized groups of up to thirty children in a session, with smaller groups and also individuals. For a standing start, the foot of the trail leg should be directly behind the starting line. Then gradually raise the height of the hurdles (1.5" at a time) until the athlete is hurdling at the specified height for racing. Theyâll then practice fast footwork drills by moving laterally, stepping over the hurdles. Repeat the drill on the other side of the hurdle, but have them lift their rear leg up in proper position off to the side, with the knee as high as possible, to show that the trail leg can also pass above the hurdle without a jump. Among the teaching points for beginning hurdlers, the start will be the easiest.    Be alert to any changes away from a sprinting rhythm. As the athletes warm up and are able to do the first lane with ease, instruct them to move to the next lane, progressively running faster. Youth events, depending on the competitorsâ ages, generally begin with 30-inch hurdles, so beginners should start with lower barriers. At this point, work on the technique corrections needed. The knee should already be in a high position and should be driven forward at this point. As they improve, begin to emphasize proper clearance techniques, with the lead leg snapping up, the upper body leaning forward, and the trial leg rising up and to the side, with the knee higher than the foot. The mini hurdles serve predominantly as a visual goal, because they actually aren't tall enough to be challenging as an obstacle. Men/Boys 110m hurdles: 39" high 13.72m (45') to the 1st hurdle 9.14m (30') between each of the 10 hurdles 14.02m (46') to the finish line. As many as 20 or more hurdlers can be training at the same time using this method. At the youth level, however, itâs a bit different. The hurdler should drive his chest over the thigh of the lead leg and, to further counteract the thrust of the lead leg, drive the opposite arm in an overemphasized sprinting action, forward and up. C. Rhythm They should do three circular motions with the trail leg, stop, then repeat several times to learn the rhythm.    Driving quickly forward over the hurdles should be emphasized as should stepping not jumping over the hurdles Even when warming up over the smaller hurdles, the hurdler should move his feet very fast. In this way, the athlete has more time between hurdles to concentrate on the clearance technique for each hurdle. Each flight should have three or four hurdles. Figure 1 â Mini hurdles in correct position but the height âHâ is now raised to full height for this athletes age (76cm). Reduced to simple terms, the ideal hurdler will basically run the 100 to 400 meters, while taking what amounts to a long, gliding stride over each hurdle. Use four hurdles.    At this time, also, the arm action during hurdle clearance should be watched. 8. Repeat entire procedure moving the distance between pairs of hurdles to 6 meters, then 7 meters, etc., until reaching the proper distance between the hurdles. For example, try running 100 meters as fast as you can.    A common fault among hurdlers is to take one step out of the blocks and then lift the head to look at the first hurdle and come to an erect running position too soon. If the action of the lead leg is allowed to lift the athlete's center of gravity above the horizontal plane of normal running, horizontal speed will be lost. Donât worry about the fine points at the beginning. The start for a hurdler should be almost the same as that for a sprinter: shoulders low, knees and legs driving hard to propel the body forward. Out of blocks over 3-5 hurdles, 3 steps between 9.    These two exercises should be incorporated into the warm-up of every workout for beginners in their first year of hurdling.
