I'm certainly grateful to have had the opportunity to share many years around such a great role model like Coach Steadman. Dr. Steadman was born on November 25, 1918 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to John Marcellus and Medora Rice (Rembert) Steadman. For a man so eminent in his field he was a shining example of humility - always willing to share his wisdom but never one to put you down.

During his long time at the Huntington Library he endeared himself to all who had the good fortune to meet him. What a gift it was for me. We are sending sincere sympathy to John's family of loved ones who will sorely miss his earthly presence. He is survived by nephews, Dr. Marion B. Dr. Steadman was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Alice Steadman McMurphy and Alice Bunker Kany. I came to realize that he knew about everything. John welcomed and encouraged everyone and I was indeed lucky to have shared many moments of his time here.
My mom just informed me-- we both agreed that we really thought he would beat this cancer, and I know we feel a closeness because of my dad's and John's diagnosis at about the same time. John Steadman passed away in Cleveland, Ohio. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
