“In 2008 we discovered that the economic system was broken beyond repair. I haven’t been involved in a poverty hearing but I was heavily involved in the work of the Cumbria Welfare Reform Commission, looking into the impacts of welfare reform, including several days of hearings in the first few months of 2014. The pain of doing that will be much less than the pain that austerity is bringing to so many lives. It is an independent, ecumenical think-tank which is not aligned to any particular denomination, but draws particular inspiration from the Anabaptist and ‘peace church’ traditions.
