Miller has been a film and television writer for Ready Steady Cut since August of 2018 and is patiently waiting for the next Pearl Jam album to come out.M.N. The values at the core of this film make it a must watch. Miss Juneteenth is a healing experience and Cathartic release for mothers everywhere. It is also to note that the winner gets a full scholarship to any historically Black college of her choosing. Her work ethic is palpable, only to be matched by the unwavering, righteous sacrifices she makes to firmly yet lovingly guide her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) into adulthood; her fortitude so unflappable that her light shines brighter than any star in the Texas night sky. Godfrey’s character study has pacing issues, but Miss Juneteenth is a star-making vehicle for Nicole Beharie as Turquoise Jones that’s a grounded expression of motherhood you rarely see on screen.
The cinematography was beautiful, especially the juxtaposition between pageant pomp and poshness vs small town Texas scenes. Definitely recommend this film. I always wanted to be in the pageant but I knew we couldn't afford it and I always felt I didn't have the talent or looks to be a Juneteenth Queen (Basically I felt I was to fat), but seeing this truly made me feel as if I was part of it from the success to the failure...I felt the pain of the actresses. The word sonder is defined as "the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own-populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries . The sense of community was portrayed with tenderness and clarity without being too forced or obvious.
Following the murder of George Floyd and the global protests and violence that followed, there is more interest in African American art and culture, and more compassion. Miss Juneteenth is a beautifully written and directed character study-an intimate, emotional exploration of the enduring and endearing resilience of the Black woman-as told through the seemingly insurmountable challenges that typify the day-to-day life experiences of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie). The dad seems like a one night stand she chatted with.

A former beauty queen and single mom prepares her rebellious teenage daughter for the "Miss Juneteenth" pageant.
